Tea Cake is fifteen years younger than Janie, and is poor with not much to offer Janie. He lets her know that all he wants is her and the age difference does not . At the age of 6, Janie saw a picture of herself with the white children Nanny took . As Janie and Tea Cake listen to the storm outside, they compare God to a "Big Cake to date her son, Tea Cake beats Janie to show she is his possession. The next day, Hezekiah tells Janie that Tea Cake is too low for a woman like her; She tells him that he will feel different in the morning. The town doesn't approve of the revered mayor's widow dating a poor, Sam Watson convinces Pheoby to talk to Janie so that she doesn't end up like Ms. Tyler, an old widow who was.
He forces her to wear a head kerchief to hide her beautiful hair from the eyes of the customers. This really emphasizes his jealous and power-hungry attitude toward his wife.
Joe Starks wanted control. He wanted to be in charge. Joe relishes in the admiration of others. When he sees that Janie disapproves of the way the townspeople mistreat a stubborn old mule, he makes them stop and then buys the poor mule from its owner in order to set it free. Toward the end of his life Joe becomes even more jealous and violent toward Janie. He slaps her once in the store, and a bitter argument causes him to quit sleeping in the same room with her.
This is where we see a significant attitude change in their relationship.

At the beginning of their marriage Janie called him by her pet name for him, Jody. As we move toward his last days, however, Janie begins to call him Joe. This shows the loss of intimacy in their relationship.
By her using his real name, we get the idea that the love they once shared is completely gone. Joe dies a bitter, hateful old man. He discovers that she is a widow and is immediately attracted to her. Janie is attracted to his happiness. Tea Cake is fifteen years younger than Janie, and is poor with not much to offer Janie.
Many people including Janie at first worry that he is just after her money.
However we soon find out that this is not the case. Tea Cake wants to take care of Janie. He even went so far as to take dollars of her money and gamble with it, but he wins it back and repays her telling her that she will never need any of her money again.
At first Tea Cake went out every day and worked in the fields while Janie stayed home. Tea Cake could not stand to be away from her, however, so he eventually asks her to come and work with him.TeaCake & Janie
At first this sounds similar to what happened to Janie when she was married to Logan Killicks, but Janie is now happy to go to work. Tea Cake does not make her work by herself, but instead works right beside her.
In her previous marriage with Joe, he isolates her from participating in fun activities such as the mule funeral. There is much enthusiasm, joy and spontaneity in this marriage that makes Janie and Tea Cake carry on like a young couple in love, whereas in her previous marriage she lacks happiness.
This chapter also reveals that Janie honestly cares for Tea Cake. After she finds that Tea Cake has been gone for a long time she prays to God for his return.
This quote is saying the obvious that she has been waiting for Tea Cake to return for two days, but it is also saying that she has been waiting a long time to find someone like Tea Cake who she genuinely loves.
She is praying to God for him not to take Tea Cake away from her because he fills the loneliness that she feels in her past relationships and she does not want to lose that. Jealousy and fear of losing him to another woman is also shown in this quote which are normal reactions that a women has when she loves a man. Jealousy by both Tea Cake and Janie in the novel indicates their attachment for each other; however their attachment may have been too strong as it eventually leads to be the death of Tea Cake.
Tea Cake loves Janie as much as she loves him.
Their Eyes Were Watching God: Marriages & Analysis
Tea Cake shows Janie affection which is something that is missing in her marriage with Joe and Logan. Tea Cake is now the one concerned about Janie. The sincere and sweet gesture of stroking her hair calms her down and reassures her that he is not going anywhere. Making Janie happy shows that he loves her because he is not happy unless she is.
Joe does not care if Janie is happy or not. He is the one that puts Janie down about her age to make himself feel better about himself.
